Researchers at the University of Sheffield have found that having orthodontic treatment before the age of 18 improves “oral-health quality of life”. The greatest improvement was in emotional and social well-being.

So if you are in the middle of braces right now, you can be fairly confident that you will be  feeling better about yourself when it’s all over!

Some of our patients run into problems during their treatment. Problems include breakages, difficulties in keeping  braces clean…or just having the feeling that treatment is taking too long. Our team are keen to help  patients through treatment in any way we can.

So any problems at all, just let us know. Either when you visit us next or through our website / social media if that’s more convenient. We also have a web chat service during office hours.

What we thought we knew already?

As orthodontists we are aware of how brace treatment can benefit our patients.

Some of these benefits are “physical” e.g. very crooked teeth can be difficult to brush around…some making them straight can make them easier to brush…which means oral hygiene improves.

We can also measure how straight we have made teeth by comparing the end result with the start. At Cleveland Orthodontics we do on this all patients who have had braces. This is part of our “Quality Control” to ensure we are doing a good job!

But emotional benefits are more difficult to quantify. In our orthodontic practice we get a “feeling” that our patients are happy as we get lots of testimonials from patients telling us so when they finish treatment. Here’s a recent testimonial from a happy patient.

This research helps because the results more objective. The researchers looked at a number of independent studies to come to their findings rather than just looking at one orthodontic practice.

Tell us your story?

We love our patients to tell us about how they have found their treatment…and how it has made a difference to them.

If you would like to send us a testimonial after your treatment (or if you have recently had your braces off), you can email us it through our website.

What is the best age to start brace treatment?

There are many good reasons why it is having braces as a teenager is a good idea : it may be available on the NHS ( subject to treatment need….read more here), teeth tend to move a little faster for younger people…and it is seen now as a routine part of teenage years.
