NHS Treatments

The waiting list for NHS orthodontic treatment is approximately 9 months from the date of the first consultation.

Fixed Metal Braces

  • Detailed orthodontic assessment
  • Treatment options discussed
  • Patient placed on NHS waiting list
  • Appointment for detailed treatment planning, X-rays, photographs and impressions
  • Treatment discussed in detail
  • Consent forms signed
  • This takes about 45 minutes
  • Braces are stuck to the teeth with glue: no needles, no drills
  • Patients can choose what brace colour they want
  • Advice will be given on brace care and oral hygiene
  • Every 6 to 8 weeks (may differ depending on treatment stage)
  • Braces are adjusted to move the teeth gently into the new position
  • Towards the end of treatment, your orthodontist or therapist may ask you to wear elastics from your top to your bottom brace
  • Braces ‘click’ off, this takes a few minutes
  • The glues polished off
  • Impressions and photographs taken
  • Patients are provided with clear removable retainers
  • Advice will be given on how to wear retainers
  • We will check that the retainers are working either via an appointment or via a telephone appointment

Twin Block Braces

  • Detailed orthodontic assessment
  • Treatment options discussed
  • Patient placed on NHS waiting list
  • Appointment for detailed treatment planning, Xrays, photographs and impressions
  • Treatment discussed in detail
  • Consent forms signed
  • We will show the patient how to insert and remove the braces
  • Advice will be given on brace care and oral hygiene
  • Every 8 weeks (may differ depending on treatment stage)
  • An assessment will be made as to whether extractions are needed
  • This takes about 45 minutes
  • Braces are stuck to the teeth with glue: no needles, no drills
  • Patients can choose what brace colour they want

  • Every 6 to 8 weeks (may differ depending on treatment stage)

  • We will show the patient how to insert and remove the braces
  • Advice will be given on brace care and oral hygiene
  • Every 8 weeks (may differ depending on treatment stage)
  • Retainers are NOT usually required
  • We will arrange to see the patient in a few years’ time if fixed braces will be needed
